How the audit works

  1. Equipment value. We match your size, system type and efficiency tier to real systems listed at HVACDirect and Alpine Home Air, and take the median listed price. Contractors usually pay distributors less than these public prices, so this is a ceiling on what the boxes cost them.
  2. Fair installed price. We run the National Residential Efficiency Measures Database (REMDB) cost model from the National Laboratory of the Rockies (formerly NREL) for your system, then add panel, thermostat and line-set work if they are in your quote.
  3. Grade. A means at or below the benchmark midpoint. F means above the top of the benchmark range. We flag quotes that look suspiciously low too.
  4. Second opinion. If you are overcharged, request a quote from a vetted independent, owner-operated HVAC company near you.
